Certified organic coffee is grown by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality.
Honduras has everything to become a premier specialty coffee producer: the right growing conditions, abundant fertile soils and soaring altitudes (nearly all farms are at more than 1,000 meters above sea level), plus a variety of microclimates.
This coffee is produced by Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas Limitada (COCAFCAL) that has over 950 members in Copan. The Coop pioneered the production of liquid and solid organic fertilizers to meet the needs of the cooperative and its partners. They also train farmers in reforestation, coffee agroforestry systems and protecting local forests and water sources.
When you buy your coffee, consider its origin, the environment and the farmers. Think about the most sustainable way to prepare it. And consider whether you can support the projects of an organization that encourages sustainability.
